Gardens and Nurseries
Whether you want a plant to give to the friend looking after the dog, a walk in the grounds of a stately home, or a course on garden design or herbal remedies there will be something to interest you around Hexham.
Hexham regularly participates with enthusiasm and success in the Northumbria in Bloom competition and the formal and sensory gardens at Hexham House are well worth a visit – a short stroll from the town centre.
Dilston Physic Garden (left), The Garden Station at Langley, and Chipchase Castle Nursery (below) are all worth a visit for their settings alone, and each has its own special appeal offering plants, courses and expertise in a wide range of areas.
A 45 minute drive will take you to the gardens at Wallington Hall (National Trust) or Belsay Hall (English Heritage) which are well worth a visit, while in little over a hour you can reach the spectacular gardens of Cragside (National Trust) or Alnwick Gardens.
Shield Green Nursery and the Holly Bush Nursery NE46 1UD are small independent retail nurseries within 5 miles of the town – In fact Shield Green can be found in the Shambles in the Market Place every day (except Sundays) throughout the year!
They also offer a selection of cut flowers, bedding plants and wildlife products.
